CNN's coverage of Canada always ends up angering me in some way, and this article is no exception.

Though voters at 60,000 polling stations also will be considering candidates from the left-of-center New Democratic Party, the French-speaking separatist Bloc Quebecois and the Green Party of environmentalists, the battle is largely between Martin and Harper.

Erm. All of the parties speak French. It's a bilingual country, it would be political suicide to have an English-only party.

The Liberals have ticked off the Bush administration numerous times in recent years, condemning the war in Iraq, refusing to join the continental anti-ballistic missile scheme and loudly criticizing Washington for rejecting the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gas emissions and enacting punitive tariffs on Canadian lumber.

Yes. How dare we stand up for our rights and for the environment.

You know, it's not going to happen but I would love it if the NDP surprised everyone and formed the majority. Hell, even a minority with the Bloc partnering up with them (hey, in my fantasy Canada, it could happen. And Layton would give them some concessions without angering the West too much, and Duceppe wouldbe all "hey, this is pretty good. Let's work on strengthening our relationship with Canada instead of rejecting them outright. Then Harper and Martin could be polite and say "hey, is there room for us?" and then they'd all work together to find a way to protect and improve social programs without increasing taxes. I have more plans but I'm realizing how implausible this all sounds. *sigh*)

I guess I'm just a left-wing idealist who wants to see this country performing and succeeding again.

the Green Party of environmentalists,

Uh yeah. Obviously CNN didn't do its research. The Green Party's environmental policies suck. The NDP's platform was rated by the Sierra Club as being far more green than the Green party's.

I don't understand your perception of Duceppe!

*gasp!* How dare you have ideals and vision?!?

I think our only hope if the Conservatives win is for a minority that lasts a shorter period of time than Kim Campbell's government did. Like [livejournal.com profile] coleman_genie, I just can't see the Conservatives playing nicely with anyone else in the House to get anything done.

Oooohh!!! I wish I could vote! We were in Portugal and the process of sending my vote by mail was just too complicated.

I think that you Canadians should invade the US and take over CNN - make it CANADIAN News Network!! At least annex New England - we've threatened to join Canada at least 2 times in the past - I don't think we'd mind going again, especially since so many of us speak French already because of all the Canadians living here!
