I am nearing the end of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, and omg. I love it so much. I'll probably finish by the end of today- I'll probably head out into the backyard later with a pot of tea, a blanket and the book.

From www.jonathanstrange.com, the reccomended further reading:
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber
The EarthSea Quartet by Ursula K. LeGuin
The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis
Perdido Street Station by China Miéville
Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
American Gods by Neil Gaiman

The Chess Garden by Brooks Hanson
Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks

I've crossed out the ones I've already read; I hope to read the others in the next few years. Next up to read though: His Majesty's Dragon, The Thief of Time,The Historian...

ETA: I just finished Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell and oh my god... )

My thoughts are all topsy turvy about the book right now, but dudes: if you get the chance to read this book, go for it.
As much as I love Homicide, and as much as I love the storyline, Bayliss' sudden realization in Closet Cases that he's bisexual has to be one of the biggest cop-outs on a coming-out (coming to terms?) story I've ever seen. Well, maybe whatever happened on the O.C., but since didn't see that, it doesn't count.

However, I love the story in the episode. I love how beautifully Bayliss comes to terms with it. I love how through the series he went from being completely blindsided by kink in the first season to being so open to most things in the final seasons. I love how beautiful Kyle Secor is in this episode as well (shallow, I know): in the car when he's talking to Frank about soulmates, and what would you do if your soulmate was an Eskimo in Alaska, I end up watching his beautiful hands as he talks. So expressive and beautiful.

In the end when they have fields in the box, the focus is blurry when it's on Bayliss. There's Fields' roughly intoned "You like my nice hard ass," and Bayliss repeating softly "I like your nice hard ass," and the shot pulls out so that you can see Fields' reflection in the mirror and then TImmy comes into focus. *flail*

The thing I hate about this episode? "You don't know Jeanine." Oh my god, Falsone, please go fuckoff somewhere and die, and take your dumb kid with you. The other thing I hate (more for the sense of impending doom and the further breakup of Meldrick&Mikey and Mike's maligning of Stivers) is the whole Luthur Mahoney shooting blackmail subplot. Bah. I know that they had to start ramping up the tension there, but still. Bah.

I'm surprised; I thought that because Homicide is being shown again, I'd end up watching it almost every day, but that hasn't happened, really. However, my tapes are starting to wear- I would get the DVDs, but they're always too expensive. Still, best damn show on TV. Still. If you ignore the last season.

ETA: Also, whenever they showed the protesters chanting We're here, we're queer, get used to it, my mind kept going we're here, we're queer, we want to get married at sea! Oh Arrested Development, how you have warped me for so many things.
