It's been ten years since the Quebec referendum. It seems silly in retrospect, but at the time, I was absolutely terrified. What if they had voted to separate? Would Canada let them secede? Or would we use military force to keep Quebec a part of Canada? Would I want to live in a country that used military force to control a segment of the population? What is a clear majority? We'll accept 50.58% to 49.42% in our favour, but what if it had gone the other way? Etc.
And then, Today in Alternate History:
So, where are we now? Has the country learned anything, or are we just repeating the same mistakes? Will Quebec eventually secede, and what changes will that effect?
And then, Today in Alternate History:
in 1995, the Canadian province of Quebec overwhelmingly approves a referendum on secession from Canada. When the rest of Canada refused to let it secede, it closed its borders and began shooting Canadian troops sent in to restore it to the bosom of Canada. The short-loved civil war ended in 1998, when Canada finally subdued the rebel province.
So, where are we now? Has the country learned anything, or are we just repeating the same mistakes? Will Quebec eventually secede, and what changes will that effect?
