Okay, I've got my ranty-pants on now.
One: At first I had no idea why this was on the front page of the CBC website. Wife gets divorce after husband has affair with another man because hey. Adultery leading to divorce, not that big a deal. Until you read further and that before this adultery was not defined, but considered an offense in a marriage if a woman cheats on her husband by sleeping with another man, or vice versa. So, this is new and I'm actually for it- adultery is adultery, no matter what the gender. I'm sure that there have been many other marriages that ended this way- they probably would have been cited as irreconceivable differences or something.
The implication in the article is that now homosexual couples can file for divorce due to adultery, since it's now recognized that a same-sex relation outside of marriage is adultery. My thing is... isn't that just common sense? And does it really merit being on the front page on the CBC webpage?
Two: I'm not sure how to feel about some of the reactions on the TWoP boards to Rome. Specifically, how the show is going to deal with the pre-Christian morals and ethics. There was mention in the show that one of the lead characters (and a crowd favourite) rapes enemy women. There seems to be a split between those that are completely against him for this, and those who accept this as an aspect of the culture they are trying to portray. And among these there seems to be a split between those that would accept the character no matter what, and those that would support until/if the show ever actually showed him raping or heavily implied it during the span of the show (the menton of him doing it was on campaign before the story begins).
Now, I'm part of the group that would support him until they saw him actually forcing himself on anyone- as much as I am a cultural relativist, and accepting things in theory, to actually see it would completely change my mind about it. But this causes internal conflict, because I really, really, really don't like thinking of myself as someone who would support a rapist. My family has been irrevocably changed by rape and I've stated before that if I ever met up with that man again I'd castrate him and beat him. So. I find myself liking a character that sometimes does what I hate the most, and I find part of myself saying "well, it's what soldiers do once they've conquered and it was certainly accepted in this time period" and "omg you fucking bastard, I'll cut your balls off."
Does it make me evil if I just ignore it and focus on the good? Because part of me is all "omg, don't want to make rape an invisible issue, swept away and women continuing to suffer in silence," but another part is all "dude, it's a tv show, get over it."
I'm just torn, and blowing off steam.
Three: I'm sure people have already seen it, but this example of hurricane coverage has me incensed. No words, really.
Four: My keyboard is getting all of these sticky letteers and such. It's making it hard to do my transcribing, but I go forth.
Five: My scarf is awesome an almost done. This isn't ranty, but I wanted to end on a good note.
