OMG, running out of time/space in this paper, and I haven't even finished the grammatical tagememe yet, nevermind the phonological and referential hierarchies/tagmemes.

Gaaaah. I do not understand the concept of the bitransitive root clause. I'm pretty sure the teacher doesn't either, or at least doesn't care. I hope.

*flails* Waaaah!

Also, what?

Wpg folk group sues to block the latest Harry Potter film from being shown in Canada
A Winnipeg folk group is suing Warner Brothers, British rock groups Radiohead and Pulp for 40 million dollars and trying to block the latest Harry Potter movie from being shown in Canada.

The group called the Wyrd Sisters alleges the Harry Potter movie due out next month contains a fictional band called the Wyrd Sisters who are actually members of Radiohead and Pulp.

In their statement of claim the Winnipeg group says the movie infringes on their trademark rights and will damage their reputation. The allegations have not been proven in court.

Neither Warner Brothers nor the musicians involved have filed statements of defence. However, Radiohead fans are fighting back and have posted dozens of messages on the Internet, calling the lawsuit a desperate attempt to get money and fame.

Dude, I could understand this if the band's name were The Hinklebrock-Fluffernut Experience, and that's the name that Rowling used in the book, but no. Wyrd Sisters has been in use for a long, long time. And dude, wyrd; I've studied wyrd. I can tell you about wyrd.

If anything, I would think that the connection between the movie and the band would be a good thing, you would conceivably have more people checking them out. But this is just dumb.

Are they going to go around preventing Macbeth from being performed in Canada, too? Or preventing Gargoyles from being released on DVD?

If anything, Shakespeare's ghost should be running around suing people and proposing injunctions. Sheesh! *eyeroll*

Dude, a good book (and I think it might be a good introduction to the Discworld series) is Weird Sisters. I think you may enjoy it (and all of the witches cycle, actually. Esp. the one where Magrat gets married.)

Sounds cool! I've got sooo many books to read! I made it about fifty pages into the second His Dark Materials book, but then school started and I haven't had a chance to pick it up again. :(

Dude.
The Hinklebrock-Fluffernut Experience would be a great band. On the premise of its awesome title ALONE.

Dude, I just pulled that one out of my ass, but YES. We should form a band.

Can I be in your awesome cool band with the bestest name ever?

Excelleeeent. I'll play the spoon.

...Singular.

TECHNICALLY, the HP band is called the Weird Sisters. Since it isn't spelled the same way, I don't know if that's trademark infringement. Although I suppose on that grounds, I could form a band and call it YooToo..... But if they spelled it "Wyrd Sisters" in the movie, then it is wrong. (and NOT CANON! .... *cough*)

I thought JK Rowling was just giving us Winnipeg Folkies a shout-out. Which, you know, would be totally kick-ass. But yes, I concur that their hissy-fit is kind of stupid.

Dude, because of OE I'm so used to thinking of Wyrd as the right way to do everything... they're the Weird Sisters?

I'd have to check IMDB to see how it's listed. And dude, if it is Wyrd, it's a shout-out to the band, Macbeth and the Norns at the well of Urd.

Yeah, it does seem like just a cheap publicity grab. In the paper today, they explained that they're worried about not being able to attract new fans after the movie comes out because people will just think they're copying the Harry Potter stuff.

Remember a couple of months before the last book came out and they had that article in the paper about other "Harry Potter"'s and their reaction to the series. And there was one crotchety old guy who was going on about, "she's making all this money off my name and here I am on old age pension. How fair is that?". People are crazy.

[identity profile] thegiantkiller.livejournal.com 2005-10-04 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think they need to worry about confusing or alienating new fans. Their music is boring.

wow, 'The Hinklebrock-Fluffernut Experience' is pretty much the coolest name evah for a band. good job.

and yeah, if they get to sue, then shakespeare's ghost gets to kick their asses.

pathetic.
