Novillero

Novillero

I have, however, finished reading Cold Comfort Farm, done a few more wildflower sketches for my project, attended a Novillero concert and talked to Sean Stevens afterwards (briefly).

Only one of those things helps me against the overwhelming sense of doom about things needing to be done before the end of the week. Ack.
Clip from Novillero show this afternoon. I haven't had a chance to listen to it, so it's likely bass heavy/scratchy/inaudible. With that glowing reccomendation, I don't know if anyone will actually give it a listen, but here it is.
Never mind. It didn't work. *pout* Instead, here's 45 seconds of fuzzy and shaky video I took this afternoon (I really know how to sell these.)

So, I was searching for lyrics to a Duotang song when I found an old interview with Rod Slaughter, and yeah.

"Winnipeg, and I get a feeling Montreal's like this too, is the kind of place where, if you want to be a socialite, you move to Vancouver. If you want to make it in the entertainment industry, you go to Toronto. For business, you move to Calgary. If you just don't know what the fuck to do, but you'll make up your mind next week, you stay in Winnipeg."

I'm so proud of my guys, I loff them. So much.

So [livejournal.com profile] coleman_genie and I got to the Park Theatre at about 7:20. At 7:30ish I finally saw the video for "The Hypothesist", on a theatre screen which was really cool. Then (after some tech difficulties) we watched "The Art of Carrying On" and then the episode of Monk.

It was hard, because both Karen and I can't stand to see anyone embarassed or put into uncomfortable situations and that's exactly what happened on the show. Anyway, very near the end, woo! There are the guys. And they play things that showcase them very well. And then there was some "acting" (Jack had the best little bit. Heh.)

The really fun part of watching the episode was that Jack was sitting with his parents (I think. There was an offhand reference to it) and we were sitting next to a friend of his, so during each "commecial break" he would mention something to him. He seems like a genuinely nice and funny guy.

After a small break they set up and played a short set, mostly covers. It was good, I like the venue, but I would have liked to have gotten up and danced but no one other than the little kids were going around (and they were mostly chasing wach other, or headbanging. So cute.)

All in all, a good night. I know that I'm really lucky that I get to see my favourite band so often (and, as we mentioned on the way back to the car, for free most of the time. Winnipeg sensibilities and all.)

My guys!

"Someone who will laugh in the face of his enemy, even when it is inappropriate."

*facepalm* Of course yesterday was the one day I didn't bother to check Myspace, and of course that was the day that Novillero posted info about the Friday party. So, not sure if I'm going, or if I can get tickets for anyone else.

Aargh.

ETA: Reposting because I can, and because it amuses me.

I'm most proud of the tambourine.

I'm trying not to be creepy with the whole "people from Novillero showing up in my dreams" thing, but talking with [livejournal.com profile] coleman_genie tonight I remembered my dream from last night where Rod Slaughter and I were detectives working a murder investigation. Of course, it ended early when the cat woke me up by barfing next to my bed. Damnit.

I'm coming to the end of the first skein of boucle of this afghan. Only 5 more to go.

While not a perfect screenshot of this scene, I love the composition of this shot. (I swear, I'll stop talking about "The Real World" soon.) Read more... )

Winnipeg power-popsters land TV cameo

And, of course, the taping led to even more opportunities for Novillero -- a lunch with actor Ted Levine (the junk-tucking Buffalo Bill from The Silence of the Lambs), a request to cover Barry McGuinn's Eve of Destruction for the TV show Eureka and, perhaps a new focus for their next album.

After re-recording tracks from last year's Aim Right For the Holes in Their Lives for the Monk crew, Johnson says the band is even more committed to translating their stage show intensity onto disc.

"We are still learning how to turn that live energy into recorded form," he says. "We recently re-recorded a couple songs from our album to be live versions and we were pleasantly surprised with how they turned out. I think that might be the direction we go next time out."

AWESOME.

Scenes from this afternoon, in which I am a bad friend.

*[livejournal.com profile] _jibberish_ and I, chatting on MSN*
me: brb
*goes downstairs to make tea. sits down on couch while waiting for water to boil, falls asleep for TWO HOURS, omg*

boycousin: [livejournal.com profile] colmena_genie phoned, and your friend is asking for you on MSN.
me: *looks at time* Oh shit!

I'm lucky my friends love me.

Tonight's show was awesome, but reaffirmed my social awkwardness. [livejournal.com profile] oracular, I'm sorry if I interrupted you and sorry for my social awkwardness. It was weird.

I'm crap at just going up to someone and introducing myself. Anyway. The show was good. I love my boys. Panurge was really good too, I bought their CD (and promptly left it in [livejournal.com profile] coleman_genie's purse. Damn.)

Home again.

Novillero on Saturday was fan-fucking-tastic. Lightening, but no rain, and then fireworks, and more music.

Spent the long-weekend out at [livejournal.com profile] ananasananas cabin sleeping, swimming and knitting. So much fun.

So exhausted. But happy.

Least favourite Novillero performance, although there's a cute bit at the end of Aim For the Holes In Their Lives. It just seems very quiet, like Rod's voice is muffled or too far away. It does pick up at Habit Over Heart, and continues on a high through the end.

Have spent the morning editing and teasing [livejournal.com profile] andrealyn with Winnipeg music. I shall soon put together the ultimate Winnipeg music playlist- any suggestions from the people who actually know different Winnipeg groups?

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] pyroclasticgrub, it's not a big deal, but mom was asking if you still had her Wailin' Jennys CDs.

[livejournal.com profile] _jibberish_,[livejournal.com profile] ananasananas, and [livejournal.com profile] coleman_genie (also [livejournal.com profile] zanzibar_mcbean and [livejournal.com profile] nyxnymph, and anyone else who'd like to join us)

Here's the info on the Icelandic Festival up in Gimli, and here's a list of what's going on. Novillero hit the stage at 8, but other than that I have no demands as to what we do.

So, thoughts being bandied about: I can borrow the truck and we can go out in that. Possibly find a spot and go camping as well, or we could (hopefully) crash at Shannon's cabing and dostuff there too.

Like Karen said, too bad it's so algae-y, we can't really go swimming on Lake Winnipeg.

For [livejournal.com profile] insidian, and others who chose "Who is Novillero?" on that last poll, Novillero.
Novillero are a Winnipeg quartet with some familiar established Canadian musicians. Featuring members of Duotang, Transonic, the Waking Eyes, Projektor, and the Pop Addiction Foundation, the band blends infectious pop with aggressive rock structures, mod themes with spacier elements, art-rock with a touch of retro pop.

Novillero- The Hypothesist <- Take that song, multiply its awesomeness by a really big number, and you get how awesome the show was last night.

Holy shit. Novillero was fucking amazing. That had to be one of my favourite concert experiences, ever.(The Paperbacks were quite good as well, and Chords of Canada were... meh.)
