So I'm pretty much done my icon for The Warlord Chronicles (The Winter King, Enemy of God, Excalibur), by Bernard Cornwell. It's probably going to be too big already, but I'm tempted to try and fit more characters into it (ooh, Merlin, Sagramor and Aelle!)

But first, my (abbreviated) cast for The Warlord Chronicles.

This is probably the one I'm least satisfied with, but it's so difficult to find a good Arthur. In the books Arthur is a master warlord who wants to be a capable ruler, and is holding the kingdom for his half-brother Mordred, until he comes of age. Things are bad, then they become good, and then they go bad again.

The last time I said that of course Nik would be my Derfel, but it works wonderfully. Derfel, the narrator of the story, is a saxon slave who grew up to be a Lord, holding land and the chaperone (? wrong word here) for Mordred. I know that in the last book he is simply going to break my heart.

Nimue is wild- Merlin's student and lover, she undergoes the three wounds to be in touch with the gods. She and Derfel are bound together by a blood oath, and he rescued her from the Isle of the Dead. She is mad, and Derfel looks out for her.

Ceinwyn is the star and Princess of Powys. She was originally betrothed to Arthur, who left her after meeting Guinevere on the night of their betrothal. Derfel later falls in love with her, and makes an oath to protect her. At her betrothal to Lancelot (where, dressed in only a bone-white dress she outshines Guinevere in beauty) she runs off with Derfel.

She pulled away slightly. 'I will marry no man, Defel,' she warned me softly, her eyes on mine. 'I will give you everything but marriage.'
'Then you give me everything I could ever want, Lady," I said...

She is the virgin that leads Merlin to the Cauldron. Never marrying him, she gives Derfel several children, and theirs is a love that seems so pefect and pure, I'm scared as to what will happen in the final book.

Guinevere is tricky. Born a princess to a lost kingdom, she intrigues Arthur after his betrothal to Ceinwyn, and marries him. He loves her beauty, confidence and intelligence, while she seems to love his power, beauty and strength. She loves beauty, to the extent of distancing herself from ugliness and bringing the beautiful to her (this includes her distancing herself from Mordred, and her closeness to Lancelot.) She worships Isis, the goddess of thrones, and in Enemy of God is exposed to Arthur as having orgies in worship and plotting to install Lancelot as the High King. Arthur still keeps her, and her fate is uncertain.

Lancelot is a bastard. A total, utter bastard.

Spoilt, vain, and a coward. He's never fought in battle, and yet all of the bards sing of his glorious victories. When Ynys Trebes is under siege, he runs off at the first chance, taking his wealth with him.Derfel hates him, and when he is to be betrothed to Ceinwyn, his hatred just seethes. After Ceinwyn runs off with Derfel, Lancelot makes life difficult for him.

Eventually Lancelot sells out Arthur's alliance to the Saxons. He's also having sex with Guinevere in worship of Isis, as an attempt to become High King.

Galahad is awesome. Possibly Derfel's closest friend, after Ceinwyn and Arthur. He's Lancelot's half-brother, and they couldn't be more different. Galahad and Derfel became friends during the siege of Ynys Trebes, and have remained together as much as possible since.

Galahad is also a Christian, which makes his journey with Derfel, Ceinwyn, Nimue and Merlin to Diwranch so very interesting. Also, to see him as a moderate Christian interacting with pagans is incredibly refreshing- it isn't portrayed in either extreme. Me likey.

Oh Tristan. You came and you brought me not only a good friend to Derfel and an awesome warrior, but also one of the most touching sequences of the enite books. Reading it, you can see that the Tristan and Iseult story could be left out of the books, and yet Cornwell seems to put so much love and beauty into it that after reading it I was just sobbing in grief.

Tristan is the Edling of Kernow, and son of King Mark. Being sent to bring home his future step-mother, Iseult (who is fifteen to Mark's fifty and Tristan's thirty), they fall in love and run to Dumnonia to try to be safe. Mark sees this as Tristan attempting to seize the throne for himself, and has his champion challenge him. Both Derfel and Galahad attempt to fight on Tristan's behalf, but Arthur doesn't let them. The champion kills Tristan, and Mark takes Iseult down to the beach where...

Iseult represents to Derfel the innocence of childhood. Had she married Mark, she would have spent a few years being humped by the king before dying early, as all of his wives had. She fell madly in love with Tristan, and didn't seem to fully understand the consequences of these actions. After Tristan is killed, Mark takes her down to the beach where she is burned alive. This episode would haunt Derfel, and would be the first real blow to his relationship with Arthur.

Interesting. Are they actually planning to make a movie out of this?

I wanna read it now! Damn you!

This is my fantasy casting next up, the casting couch...

They have The Winter King at the Louis Riel library, or you can borrow my copy once [livejournal.com profile] coleman_genie's done with it.

"But this guy was just unfuckable!"

I noticed you cast poor Orlando as Lancelot. Didn't he get enough of a beating as Paris?

He did, and other than Arthur, it's the one piece of casting I worry about. I don't think Orlando is capable of being that much of an utter skeevy bastard, but on the other hand Lancelot is supposed to be the most beautiful man in Britain.

It's a toss up.

I promise it's on my to-read list, right after the new Harry Potter book. If you want it back before that, just let me know.

No problem. I have a feeling that HBP is going to the tops of a lot of people's reading lists right now.

Not yet. I had lent my cheap copy to a friend, and then [livejournal.com profile] numensule gave me a gorgeous copy, and I've still yet to read it. One day, I till have read it.
