So, um. If I was to organize a Jane Austen book club for people in Winnipeg, would anyone on my flist like to come? I'm not sure how it would be organized yet, but I'm just trying to gauge interest.I'm thinking it would be pretty informal.

I'm feeling memeish: Go to the Randomly Generated Quotes page, and select five of them that apply to you.

Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.
Abigail Adams (1744 - 1818), 1780

If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.
George Carlin (1937 - )

I was in yoga the other day. I was in full lotus position. My chakras were all aligned. My mind is cleared of all clatter and I'm looking out of my third eye and everything that I'm supposed to be doing. It's amazing what comes up, when you sit in that silence. 'Mama keeps whites bright like the sunlight, Mama's got the magic of Clorox 2.'
-Ellen Degeneres

The meek shall inherit the earth? Well... I don't think so. If by meek you mean friendly and introverted, okay maybe, but if by meek you mean unwilling to take a chance, then never. If I was a betting man and I had to wager on who I thought would inherit the earth, my money would be on the curious.
Jim Coudal, Keynote Speech, SXSW 2006

There is no need to go to India or anywhere else to find peace. You will find that deep place of silence right in your room, your garden or even your bathtub.
Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

And this one seems perfect for Baxter time: Oh! Do not attack me with your watch. A watch is always too fast or too slow. I cannot be dictated to by a watch. - Jane Austen, Mansfield Park

That meme where you guess what movie the quote is from:
1. And it's always there, in the lower right hand corner, just waiting to suck.
2. Anyone who wants to be a can't-hack-it pantywaist who wears their mama's bra, raise your hand.
3. Oh, I saw... Very American. Fire enough bullets and hope to hit the target. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
4. I know you. If I were blind I'd know what you are. The Last Unicorn
5. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something. Crash
6. There's a 30% chance that it's already raining! Mean Girls
7. Look, we all go way back and uh, I owe you from the thing with the guy in the place and I'll never forget it.
8. Okay... You know, all I'm sayin' here, is one of us might need a little nap. Dogma
9. No, I'm not an American. I'm a nymphomaniac.
10. I believe in love. Not just getting it, but giving it. I think that if you're able to love someone, even if they don't know it, even if they can't love you back, then it's worth it. Gosford Park

Sorry to [livejournal.com profile] pyroclasticgrub and [livejournal.com profile] numensule about punking out on dinner tonight. Mom's leaving tomorrow (just for a say or two) and she wanted to have dinner out with me. To talk.

She always makes it sound so serious, but really, it's the same conversation we always have- I explain what I'm doing at school and how I'll probably be in scool in some form or another for the next five years of my life (including the year off I want to take to try and earn at least some money for the future). We discussed our next round of home improvements (eavestroughs and new flooring) and how in debt we are. And we are. I'm a little worried, actually, but mom says it's not that bad and we've actually got a handle on it.

So for the S&B tomorrow, who's coming? [livejournal.com profile] numensule, are you coming, and if so are you sleeping over again? Because I can take the bus in with you in the morning, assuming I wake up in time.

I recced this to [livejournal.com profile] fairestcat, and now I'm reccing it to everyone: Roundabout, by [livejournal.com profile] casirafics Dr Who (9th Doctor/Rose) PG 13. Brilliant.

I have Novillero's cover of Ceremony stuck in my head. I'm enjoying it. :)

Went Fringing with [livejournal.com profile] zanzibar_mcbean this afternoon, then hung out at home with a massive migraine. Began to feel better, then went out with [livejournal.com profile] coleman_genie for food. We ate chips and discussed future knitting projects. Began to work on new way of casting on, until Ir ealized it was 10:45, and I wouldn't be able to remember anything anyway. Will work on it this weekend (possibly starting the knitting projects then too.)

I finished reading Wolf-Speaker, and will have to wait until Thursday(at the earliest) to begin reading the next book in the series. I was despairing, until I realized that I still have Excalibur to read. Excellent.

No society that feeds its children on tales of successful violence can expect them not to believe that violence in the end is rewarded. -Margaret Mead, anthropologist (1901-1978)

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] trollprincess: List ten movie soundtracks you love and tell why. )

Neil Gaiman will be in Minneapolis, signing copies of Anansi Boys, the day after my birthday. I think that I should be there.

I'm having trouble typing, because my arm is still sore from yesterday. Needless to say, transcribing didn't go so well today.

Also, am I the only one slightly freaked out that The Weakerthans are on the Wedding Crashers soundtrack? I mean, yay for them and all, but still. Dude?

1) What's the first word that comes to mind when you think of me?
2) Go to http://images.google.com/ and search for that word.
3) Reply to this post with one of the pictures on the first page of results (don't tell me the word).
4) Put this in your own blog so that I can do the same.

I forgot that I was supposed to go golfing tonight, so I may be late for [livejournal.com profile] _jibberish_'s party (I'm a horrible friend). I'm going to have to phone andfind out when and where, and if I can borrow someone's golf clubs.

I'm also heading down to the university to try and get my cross-listed courses changed. I should probably phone the professor first to see what the requirements for the double honours in linguistics are- I might not have to change them. Well, I'll have to see if I can get the Anthro one changed, since it's dragging down the Anthro GPA but won't hurt the English GPA by much.

1) Total number of fandoms I like:
Countless, but I'll try:
King Arthur, Black Hawk Down, House, National Treasure, Wimbledon, Pirates of the Caribbean, West Wing, Buffy: the Vampire Slayer, lotrips, popfic,Sharpe, Hornblower, Robin Hood, Good Omens, Sandman, Harry Potter, His Dark Materials, The Dark Is Rising...

2) My first fandom ever:

3) My most recent fandom:

4) Five fandoms that currently mean a lot to me: with explanations
Black Hawk Down: It's based on such an important event, that I like to see done well and right.

Lost: I'm invested in the characters, so I like to see other people's interpretations of said characters. Plus, it's been so long since I've been in a TV based fandom, I had forgotten how canon can change from week to week.

King Arthur: Taking a story that everyone knows, and giving it a twist: I love stories like this, and this is the canon here: I love to see what writers do with that, incorporating pieces of other Arthur mythology (Malory, etc.). Plus, I grew closer to many fanomd types and met new people. :)

Sharpe/Hornblower: Really, almost one fandom. Met so many awesome people, have learned a hell of a lot about so many things and have been exposed to such a different style of fanfic. <3

Harry Potter: First, the canon which I love, love, love. Then the fandom itself (which scares me so much at times that I'm content to stay on the edges) which produces so much variety from the canon (and from fanon as well) which is just awesome in scope (and scariness).

5) Tag 5 people to put this in their journal:
[livejournal.com profile] baked_goldfish
[livejournal.com profile] piratelooksat20
[livejournal.com profile] damned_colonial
[livejournal.com profile] rynwalyn

proving what I already knew: I'm good with the tricky stuff, not so good with the easy )

Mom left. Am sad. She said goodbye before I fell asleep, because we knew I wouldn't wake up in time to see her. :( The cat knows that something's up. It's going to be a tough two weeks for her.

And dammit. Now that I actually have some extra cash, there are no movies playing that I want to see. I stand corrected. Crash is playing at St.Vital today (12:50, 4:10, 7:35, 10:10) Hrm. I could either go see it by myself at noon, and then rush home to tidy up before the party, or wait and see if it's still playing tomorrow and find someone to go with me. Bah. Tomorrow. If it's not playing then, I'll be upset but fine.

I hope people who are coming to the party know where my house is. Hrm. I think I shall clean up, and then nap. Much better.

My ankle hurts. *whiiiine* It's never going to be 100%. I just hope it's good enough for curling next season.

ETA: And now the sink is leaking. Fucking hell.

I firmly believe that the greatest (material) gift you can give someone is a book that you yourself enjoyed.

Followed by music you enjoy, movies, etc.
